We don't recommend that anyone investigate a suspicious alarm by themselves, either at home or at work. It is possible that a thief is still there and interrupting a thief is potentially dangerous. It is best to go in pairs, or have someone remain on the phone with you. Never enter an area that shows signs of damage. Call 911 and follow their instructions. For a fee, you can also use a guard service to investigate.
If the monitoring station dispatches the police and/or fire station and there is no break-in or fire, most regions will charge a fee for responding to the false alarms. False alarms are a very real problem for police and fire departments. They prevent their crews from responding to legitimate alarms and increase their costs.
