Alarm systems are designed to wait for something to happen and generate an alarm when it does. Whether your neighbour or the company's security office responds, it is important that someone does. While the siren going off at 3am will likely scare off thieves that broke your bedroom window, it will also create a mob of angry neighbours if nobody arrives to shut it off while you're in Florida. After they've all gone home to try go back to sleep, the thieves may return if they know that nobody will respond to the alarm.
At home, your best defense is a good neighbour. If you don't have a good neighbour (or you are trying to protect your house from your neighbour), you can have your system monitored. Before you ask for monitoring, be sure to read the section on 'False Alarms' and 'Monitoring' to avoid problems that could cost you money.
At work, monitoring may be your best option unless your landlord or company has its own security. It's best if the alarm system is somebody's job, and make sure this person, or an alternate, is always available.
